1.Immediate cooling and pain relief: The gel layer has a high water content. Upon contact with the wound, it rapidly evaporates and absorbs heat, lowering the surface temperature and alleviating burning pain. Some research-grade dressings are also exploring the incorporation of analgesic drugs for more precise pain management.

2.Moist wound healing and debridement: It maintains a moist environment to promote healing while also absorbing a small amount of exudate. During dressing changes, the gel is removed along with the exudate, preventing adhesion and avoiding secondary injury from tearing.

3.Physical barrier and antimicrobial protection: It forms a protective layer over the wound to shield it from external bacteria. Some products incorporate special ingredients (e.g., chitosan, zinc ions) to provide active antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, reducing the risk of infection.

4.Conformability and convenience: The dressing is typically soft and flexible, making it easy to conform to irregular body areas such as joints. Some are even designed to be injectable or to gel in situ upon contact with the wound, facilitating first-aid application in challenging areas.
